this district. Sri Satya Sai Baba of Puttaparthi a famous spiritual personality
hails from this district and people all around the world have great faith in
him. Bhagavan Sri Satya SaiBaba's Prasanthi Nilayam is situated at Puttaparthi.

This District is coined to be the area wise biggest district in Andhra Pradesh.
The Boundaries of Anantapur district are Cuddapah district, Chittoor district
and Karnataka State border, Karnataka State and Kurnool district in the East,
South, West and North directions respectively. The Place was under the rule
of Pallava, Chalukya, Rastra Kuta, Nolamba, Chola and Vijayanagara Kings. Later
on it came into the possession of Hyder Ali and Tippu Sultan. It is one of the
four districts of Rayalaseema.
One of the four Industrial development centers approved by the Government of
India is in this district. This district is often affected by drought. The occupations
are silk production and agriculture. Tungabhadra Upper Canal is the only source
of water for Irrigation. Some proposals are made for constructing Maddhileru
Reservoir on Maddhileru canal at Adavi Brahmanapally. The major source of drinking
water is through Handri- Niva Sujala Sravanthi Project. Andhra and Karnataka
States Joint Project at Hampi on River Tungabadra fulfill the electricity needs
of this district. The forest occupies 10% of the total area. There are three
Universities in the district viz.,Sri Krishna devaraya University, Jawaharlal
Nehru Technological University and Sri Satya Sai university.
